Aluminum-Boron


The aluminum–boron master alloy provides controlled boron additions for melt treatment, electrical performance stabilization, and microstructure control in aluminum. Offered in AlB3 and AlB5 grades (higher‑boron variants on request), it dissolves quickly with stable recovery and consistent chemistry.


We have manufactured and developed these alloys since 1995 and hold 100+ patents with multiple system certifications. The product supports reliable performance in conductor aluminum and critical alloy production for foundries and rolling operations.


Functions and benefits


  • Boron treatment for electrical applications: In EC and 1xxx alloys, it ties up trace Ti and V that depress conductivity. Proper dosing helps meet resistivity targets without over‑addition, preserving properties and limiting scrap.


  • Works with AlTiB grain refiners: When used alongside AlTiB, it helps tune nucleation for fine, uniform grains. This supports improved feeding, reduced hot‑tearing risk, and better surface quality in cast and wrought products.


  • Control of trace elements and cleanliness: Supports management of Ti, V, and Cr in sensitive compositions. With appropriate fluxing and degassing, melts show low inclusions and predictable recovery.



Grades and forms



  • Compositions: Standard AlB3 (~3% B) and AlB5 (~5% B); AlB8/AlB10 on request. Tight tolerances and low residuals reduce process variability.


  • Forms and packaging: Waffle ingots, small waffles, cut bars, or customized shapes for different furnace sizes and addition practices. Clean surfaces and controlled dimensions promote fast melting and low melt loss.


  • Addition practice: Dissolves readily at typical temperatures with gentle stirring. Preheating and staged additions can enhance recovery and limit dross, especially in large furnaces.

  • Integrates with other master alloys: Pairs well with AlTiB, AlMn, AlCu, and AlSi. Follow standard addition order and mixing to ensure uniform distribution.

  • Electrical conductor aluminum (EC and 1xxx): Helps achieve target conductivity by neutralizing Ti and V in rod, wire, and cable.


  • Selected wrought and foundry alloys: In specific 5xxx/6xxx/3xx systems, controlled additions limit impurity effects and support consistent structure, surface finish, and machining response.

  • Microstructure and dissolution: Fine, uniform boride dispersions underpin predictable dissolution with minimal undissolved particles under standard practice.


  • Residual elements: Low residuals (e.g., Na) support stable electrical properties.

  • Aluminum–boron vs aluminum boride (AlB2): This is a master alloy engineered for controlled boron dosing; boride phases exist within it, but it is not a standalone ceramic compound.


  • Choosing between this alloy and AlTiB: Use this product when the goal is boron treatment and conductivity stabilization; use AlTiB for primary grain refinement. Many melt shops employ both.
